The healthcare corpus of terms exceeds the medical field when it comes to insurance, medical plans and coverage. Administrative procedures and legal riders come in place, and the translator should be able to deal with each aspect of the source material appropriately. Origins of the source materials, biding regulations and standards and target populations will drive his/her translation decisions in terms of choice of words.
During this presentation, we will briefly cover:
* Concepts related to health care and health insurance
* A quick review of the U.S. Healthcare system
* Some illustrative examples with appropriate Translations (in Spanish)
Knowing about the diverse array of medical contents and formats help us understand our position in the professional world better, to be aware of different translation strategies and the functions translations have fulfilled at different stages, to be critical and analytical while considering alternatives and to learn to justify our choices and argue in an informed way about them. It may also help us to understand better different ways of thinking, writing and arguing, and to build bridges between scientists, physicians, students, patients and the general public from different cultures. Such different content vary from scientific papers communicating a new advancement to the advertisement targeted to the general public, including, product characteristic sheets prepared to obtain official clearances, informed consent documents and patient educational brochures, to name a few.
In this short webinar, we will try to depict the diverse communicative purposes, contexts and participants of some of them as a roadmap to understanding different medical contents as a preparation for an accurate and appropriate translation.
This webinar is intended for translators who want to specialize in medical translation or who have already started working in this field but need to enhance their knowledge and learn about new sources of information. Some experience in the life sciences arena will be useful to understand specific terminology, like document naming, but it is not a must. The webinar will be delivered in English, with some examples in Spanish for the sake of clarification and illustration.

Luciana Ramos - Se graduó como traductora técnico-científica y literaria e intérprete en Rosario, Argentina. Es traductora en inglés certificada por la American Translators Association de los EE. UU. Se graduó como traductora técnico-científica y literaria e intérprete en Rosario, Argentina. Es traductora en inglés certificada por la American Translators Association de los EE. UU. Actualmente cursa el Máster universitario en traducción médico sanitaria de la Universidad Jaume I de Castellón, España. Con especial énfasis en la traducción de textos de biomedicina, trabajó desde 1996 hasta 2005 para diversas empresas multinacionales en el área de la medicina y la traducción de programas informáticos. En los últimos diez años, su experiencia como traductora y correctora se combinó con la tarea de formación de nuevos profesionales gracias a su incesante participación en cursos y seminarios internacionales relacionados con la traducción médica. Desde 2005 a junio de 2011 fue socia de Ocean Translations S.R.L., donde su labor se centró en la selección y formación de personal, el análisis y la implementación de las nuevas tecnologías, y el control de calidad. Participó en los trabajos de traducción para la OMS, la OPS, el Banco Mundial, ONUSIDA y muchos otros centros de investigación y desarrollo biomédico. Actualmente se dedica a la traducción como profesional autónomo, a la formación de traductores, y al asesoramiento empresarial en traducción y tecnologías afines. Ha publicado artículos en las revistas Panacea y Multilingual sobre las tecnologías, la traducción médica y la profesión en general.
